Brother And Cool Earth Launch Rainforest Rescue Competition
Pupils can win a live lesson link-up with a school in Brazil by entering a new competition sponsored by Brother and pioneering rainforest charity Cool Earth.
The ‘Rainforest Rescue’ challenges secondary school pupils to participate in their own media production focusing on how they would protect the planet by saving the rainforest and helping to fight climate change.
Students in years 7 to 13 will produce a short video lasting up to five minutes, which can be adapted into a live fifteen minute performance, should the pupils progress to the finalist stage.
The winning school will also have a protected area of the Amazon rainforest named after it, receive a selection of Brother printers along with a recycling pack and have the chance to showcase their work at a major education event. All the finalists will receive Brother’s ‘Visitor ID Printing Solution’, plus the first 50 entrants will also receive a protected tree in their school’s name.
The closing date for the initial stage of the competition is Friday 27th May 2011 at 5pm and the final winner will be announced on Friday 16th September 2011.
Michelle Molloy, education senior business manager at Brother UK, said: “Our partnership with Cool Earth demonstrates our commitment to reducing our environmental impact and protecting biodiversity.
“The competition will allow schools to develop their environmental awareness while having the opportunity to win some fantastic once-in-a-lifetime prizes.
“We already contribute to the pioneering work of Cool Earth with our Eco-Rewards scheme. Our ‘ReNew’ recycling programme enables us to protect a tree in the Peruvian Amazon when customers return old ink and toner cartridges. The new competition will give schools another way to improve their eco-credentials.”
Matthew Owen, director at Cool Earth, said: “The Rainforest Rescue competition is a way of getting school children really thinking about why and how we need to protect rainforest. Cool Earth and Brother are looking for some really creative ideas which reflect an enthusiasm and keen interest in keeping trees standing.”
