Facet Publishing Announce The Release Of Read To Succeed: Strategies To Engage Children And Young People In Reading For Pleasure

A recent survey by the National Literacy Trust showed that only one in six UK children between eight and 17 years of age read a novel outside class every month and that 10% of the 18,000 surveyed “do not enjoy reading at all”.

Read to Succeed covers the very best innovative practice in reader development for children and young people from birth to adulthood, both in the UK and abroad.  It is full of practical suggestions and inspirational ideas that can be replicated by teachers, librarians and educators.

The book is edited by Joy Court who is the national coordinator for CILIP’s Carnegie and Kate Greenaway Children’s Book Awards.  Joy said, At a time when the role of children’s librarians in both schools and public libraries is under threat I felt it was vital to have expert testimony from academics and educationalists about the importance of the contribution that libraries can make to a child’s literacy. They demonstrate that confident, successful readers cannot be grown in the classroom alone. This will, I hope, be a very timely message to deliver to the powers that be!”

This edited collection contains contributions from expert practitioners and includes a Foreword from best-selling children’s author Alan Gibbons, who paraphrased Bill Shankly and said, “Reading is not just a matter of life and death; it is much more important than that”.

There is a launch for the book on Thursday 15th September at CILIP in London, please contact James Williams to request an invite or to request a review copy.
