Hallfield Head Heads To Buckingham Palace

The Headmaster at Hallfield School in Edgbaston was recently invited to Buckingham Palace by Prince Andrew, Duke of York, to take part in an Education Forum organised for the Outward Bound Trust.

Mr Richard Batchelor was one of 200 people who were selected to attend the forum where they discussed the role of how outdoor education prepares youngsters to develop vital skills for all walks of life.

“I felt very honoured to have been invited to the forum as it shows a level of recognition for my work with the Outward Bound Trust.”

Richard is a professional mountaineer and holds the International Mountain Leaders Award from the British Association of International Mountaineers.

“I have been mountaineering since I was 17 years old and have been involved in outdoor pursuits throughout my entire teaching career.”

He joined Hallfield School in 2009 as Director of Studies and swiftly reformed the position of outdoor pursuits within the school by introducing a residential trip to South Wales for Year 4 and a week-long stay at the Outward Bound Centre in Ullswater for Year 6.

“I’ve been involved with the Outward Bound Trust for years and enjoy it immensely.  The courses they hold say a lot about its recipients - their determination, commitment and skills to contribute to society. I would urge more people to take part in them to build confidence, mental stamina and also to make some great memories in the process.

“The Outwards Bound Trust has been a key part of my life so to be invited to Buckingham Palace for a forum about its work is amazing.

“Plus, It was also a real treat to go to the throne room and meet Prince Andrew himself.”
