Igloo delivers 2.5m school breakfasts

Igloo, the UK’s leading independent chilled and frozen food logistics company, is celebrating completion of five years with the delivery of its 2,500,000th school breakfast.

Each week 250-300 schools as far as Durham and Southampton receive their meals from Magic Breakfast charity on one of Igloo’s temperature controlled vans.

Igloo receives weekly deliveries of a range of different breakfast products from many suppliers.  It then assembles and packages the items into breakfasts ready for delivery.   All schools have individual requirements with specific dietary requirements so attention to detail is important.

Since starting with Magic Breakfast in 2008 the contract has grown 400% from its initial 50 drops a week and it is growing annually as more schools sign up to the TMB scheme.  To date the total deliveries are nearly 30,000.

Igloo has invested in a specific IT system to support this programme to enable more effective ordering processes, provide more efficient vehicle routing with the minimum mileage and to provide estimated times of arrival on every delivery.

Alex Cunningham General Manager of Magic Breakfast said: “We provide nutritious breakfasts for 12,500 children in 350 primary schools each day.  We target schools where 35% of the children are eligible for free school meals.   Children who arrive at school hungry do not concentrate so it is essential that our breakfasts arrive on time to help start their days off with a nutritious meal.   Igloo has delivered our breakfasts on time every time for five years regardless of the weather, it is an amazing achievement.”
