Norfolk schools to save £1,000s a year with energy efficiencies
Energy saving company SaveMoneyCutCarbon is helping Norfolk schools to ease pressure on tight budgets with self-financing energy saving projects.
The company is working with the Norwich Diocese, which supports 111 local schools to help save £1,000s a year through lower energy bills and so free up funds for educational activities.
SaveMoneyCutCarbon is energy partner with Anglian Water Business, which introduced the company to Norwich Diocese.
The latest school to benefit is Taverham Junior School, which is now saving nearly £4,000 a year in energy bills through a full LED lighting installation.
Equally important, the learning environment for the children has been vastly improved. An additional benefit is that the school’s lighting “carbon footprint” has been reduced by more than 60%.
The new lighting has been paid for through an interest-free loan from Salix Finance, which funds public sector energy-saving projects.
The loan repayments will be fully covered by the savings made on lighting bills and then the school will go on saving money for many years as the LED lights will last for more than a decade with no maintenance costs.
Holden Cook, Chief Operating Officer of SaveMoneyCutCarbon said: “All schools are facing increased financial pressures and many are struggling with old, inefficient lighting. Hopefully the success of this project will lead to other schools taking advantage of the unique opportunity to cut energy costs, improve lighting and reduce carbon footprint.”
Headteacher Paul Stanley says that he was very sceptical about the idea of a project that paid for itself but that “the repayments on the interest-free capital loan we have been given to pay for the lighting refit will be paid by the savings in our electricity bills which, along with our carbon footprint, will be reduced by a massive 63%.
“We are delighted with the results. We can see the difference in the quality of light within the school and we have finally got rid of the horrible, dismal ‘orangey’ lighting.
“I am convinced that the brighter, better-quality and more natural looking lighting will have positive benefits for our staff and pupils’ well-being, as well as pupils’ learning progress, which research shows can be improved by 21% with effective lighting in classrooms.” (Research source: ‘Clever Classrooms’; Summary report of the HEAD project - University of Salford, 2015)
“I would wholeheartedly recommend any school getting involved in this project. The improvements in lighting and its impact on learning and well-being are reason enough; to know that we will also be saving money and doing our bit to help the planet is also a huge positive. “
Neil King, Business Account Manager, Anglian Water Business, said: “We were delighted to help Taverham CE Junior School save money, reduce CO2, and bring real benefits for their pupils.
“We work constantly to save our customers money and make sustainable energy savings; adding value and ensuring leading customer service at every stage.
“Our partnership with SaveMoneyCutCarbon is a perfect example of this approach in action.”
SaveMoneyCutCarbon replaced 425 lights, including panels, tubes, 2D fittings and floodlights across the whole school.
The installation team – all fully DBS checked – worked closely with the school to minimise disruption, working nights.
SaveMoneyCutCarbon’s technical team specified quality LED lighting because of its low energy use, high reliability and exceptional working life of at least 50,000 hours. In contrast, incandescent light bulbs typically last around 1,000 hours and fluorescents are good for roughly 5,000 hours before light degradation occurs.
SaveMoneyCutCarbon used its expertise within the education sector to swiftly survey and specify replacement LED lighting, managing the entire process of installation and testing. Equally important, SMCC completed the complex Salix funding application on behalf of the school and at no cost to them.
