PEL Music & Media has installed a sophisticated, yet easy to use, integrated audio visual systems solution for Kings College School, Wimbledon.

Founded in 1829 by Royal Charter, King’s College School is an independent day school for over 1200 pupils.  It prides itself on being one of the top academic schools in the country with an exceptional co-curricular programme.

In order to stand out in this competitive market, Kings College strives to continually improve its range of facilities.  Most recently this has encompassed the audio visual equipment in The Great Hall - one of the largest school halls in England.

The Hall’s incumbent sound system was dated, with poor audibility and control.  The aim was to make the Hall’s facilities a key focal point, with its sound system reflecting the overall quality of the school.  PEL Music & Media, originally employed by Kings College to design and install a new sound system, was actually able to provide a much wider audio visual solution, incorporating lighting and presentation facilities, all within the school’s budget.

The new audio visual system at Kings College features Bose speakers, Electrovoice amps and a BSS BLV-100 digital processor at the heart of the sound system, with two mics on the stage lecterns and two radio mics which allow for movement across the stage and for audience participation.  Modern, energy efficient LED lighting and ten 2-3 metre motorised electric window blinds were also installed.  Where possible, existing AV equipment was retained and integrated.  The entire system - sound, lighting, automated blinds, projector screen and projector – are controlled using a Crestron digital system operated from an iPad or PC.

For complete ease of use, a number of pre sets (such as for use with live music or a major presentation) have been programmed into the Crestron system by PEL; these are readily accessible at the touch of a button.

Rhys Tomlin, Site Manager, at Kings College is very pleased with the outcome: “the new system is a dramatic improvement, in terms of the quality of sound, the flexibility of the lighting which allows us to create moods for recitals, for example, and the ease of use.  It does exactly what we want it to do and has made the Hall more flexible in its use.

“The simplicity of use was very important to us.  We have set configurations that are pre programmed, such as for public speaking; at the touch of a button the entire system is changed to that configuration.  We can still make slight adjustments to that setting if required but it’s so much easier.  This is important not only for the school’s use but also because the Hall is used out of school hours for public events.  Now, it can be set up for that event at the touch of a button and the visitors don’t need to worry about a thing.  Also, it prevents any unwanted interference!  Ultimately, people have more confidence using the technology as it’s so easy.”

For Rhys, service was one of the deciding factors in the appointment of an installer: “PEL are specialists in their area and understood what we were trying to achieve and met those requirements in a way that we can all understand.  The service was really very good and very quick – installation was completed in just two weeks with minimum disruption.”
