REWARDING HYGIENE IN SCHOOLS

Education providers are being rewarded for their commitment to improving hygiene in schools- especially in the toilet.

The 2015 Loo of the Year Awards have, for the first time, introduced a special award for school hygiene rooms, sponsored by the market leader in toilets and bathroom assistive technology, Clos-o-Mat, with the inaugural Trophy being won by Ceredigion County Council’s Aberporth Special School.

Now, schools, colleges and universities are being invited to begin submitting their entries for the 2016 Awards. There is a national award category for each country- England, Scotland, Ireland & Wales, plus the overall UK Trophy.

Says Mike Bone, Loo of the Year Awards managing director, “Poor toilets have a negative impact on pupils and students who may avoid using the toilets because they are dirty, smelly, lack basic provisions, are not private enough, or because they are not allowed to go to the toilet when they need to. There are medical conditions that can be caused or exacerbated by the avoidance of, or limited access to, school toilets.

“The provision of access to high quality toilet facilities is a key factor in education. It can have a positive influence on pupils’ willingness and ability to learn, their behaviour, morale and attendance levels. Access to well-designed and attractive toilets which suit the needs of all types of users of educational establishments should be a right and demonstrate respect for our younger generation.”

Adds Kelvin Grimes, Clos-o-Mat hygiene room project manager. “Hygiene rooms, or care suites as they are sometimes called, are increasingly important in any school building, new or a refurbishment, extension. More and more children and young adults with special needs are entering mainstream education, and going on to further education, university: 1:20 in mainstream school is now disabled. And there is the issue of toilet-training among infants, and continence- almost 1million children and young adults have a bladder and/or bowel problem.

“It is our awareness of the growing need for the facilities, and ensuring those facilities are good, that we have introduced and are continuing to support the hygiene room awards at Loo of the Year.”

Educational establishments wanting to submit their facilities for the 2016 Awards can do so online: http://www.loo.co.uk/190/Entry-Form. And to help them get the facility right, Clos-o-Mat has a raft of support information re specification, white papers etc available on its website www.clos-o-mat.com
