Schools To Adopt New Lifesaving Programme Meeting New Ofsted Framework
SCHOOLS TO ADOPT NEW LIFESAVING PROGRAMME MEETING NEW OFSTED FRAMEWORK
A new lifesaving programme from the Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS UK) is to be introduced into schools in the UK. The Survive & Save Programme gives the essential skills that can be used in GCSE and A Level PE assessments. It will also aid schools in providing evidence for behaviour and safety judgements under the new Ofsted Inspection Framework that comes into fruition this January.
Aimed at young adults over the age of 12, the course offers participants the opportunity to develop personal survival and rescue skills, as well as improve their general fitness, through the swimming and sport elements of the programme.
The programme consists of four strands - beach, stillwater, sport and the medallion awards of which Bronze, Silver and Gold medals can be awarded to successful candidates. The variety in awards is designed to broaden the experiences of lifesavers as well as offer fun and different ways of learning. Ray Lau, Educational Consultant and Development Officer at Survive and Save Club, based in Harrow says: One of the benefits of the new programme is that it is a nationally recognised programme, which can assist with school swimming programmes for the more advanced swimmers. It also prepares the skills and knowledge required for GCSE and A level PE assessments.
“Pupils development of lifesaving skills would contribute to their greater understanding of water safety and protection. This would provide schools with suitable evidence for behaviour and safety judgements of the new Ofsted inspection framework from January.”
Mike Dunn, Lifesaving Programme Manager at RLSS UK says: “The Survive & Save Programme teaches candidates essential water safety skills and develops the individuals awareness of their surroundings and decision making skills. There is a clear and structured progression which encourages candidates to continue with the programme for longer, which is perfect for keeping GCSE students engaged.”
